The Operational Impact of Workforce Gaps in Heavy Machinery & Equipment
Heavy machinery runs on people who took years to train. Those people are retiring.
Manufacturers need 3.8 million more workers by 2033, and the pool they’re drawing from has been shrinking for four decades: employment sits at 12.6 million now, down close to 40% from its 1989 peak. Turnover makes it worse, running 28.6% in manufacturing against 3.8% across U.S. jobs overall, with more than four in ten new hires leaving before their second year. For equipment builders, that hits hardest in the roles that carry the most institutional knowledge, and the skills picture is shifting too, with executives expecting more demand for AI and technical specialists while traditional assembly roles decline.
