Manufacturers will need 3.8 million more workers by 2033, and they’re recruiting from a pool that has been shrinking since the eighties. Employment sits at 12.6 million today, down close to 40% from its 1989 peak, and the roles that do get filled don’t stay filled: turnover in manufacturing runs 28.6% against 3.8% for U.S. jobs overall, with most of the loss happening inside the first year. Meanwhile the skills are moving. Executives say they need AI and technical specialists, not more of the roles they used to post.
